A new Armagh plaza connecting a redeveloped Gaol and Mall...
With traffic flowing underneath...
Imagine a vibrant new plaza connecting a redeveloped Gaol – and Gaol Square – with the magnificent Mall.
Well, thanks to McCreanor & Co Architects, you don't have to imagine it; they've got photos and a fantastic fly-through video (see below) of how this might work...
While the artwork was commissioned in 2023 – and is only a concept – we were keen to get your thoughts on the whole thing.
According to McCreanor & Co, this is their proposed masterplan for the heart of Armagh, reimagining the historic connection between the Armagh Gaol and The Mall.
The vision centres on a vibrant new plaza that seamlessly links these iconic landmarks, both visually and figuratively, creating a grand approach and allowing for unrestricted pedestrian movement.
By utilising the natural slope towards The Mall, they were able to create a tunnel for traffic to pass beneath, allowing uninterrupted pedestrian flow above and more seamless vehicular movement below.
This plaza was envisioned as a new cultural hub for Armagh, hosting markets, performances, tours, and serving as a lively gathering space for the city.
The hope was that this project would act as transformative intervention for the Gaol connecting it back to the city, breathing new life into the historic / cultural landmark by unlocking its potential as a dynamic, multi-purpose destination.
Imagine!

Get the railway up and running first. Nice idea but where do they think the money is coming from when they wouldn't even sort casement park?
Catch yourself on, 40% of the city centre shops are closed because of the ridiculous rates bills, not counting the rates exempt charity shops, I'm paying nearly £2000 of a rates bill on my house as it is, because the so called " Tourist attractions " are running at a substantial loss, year on year, spend your time and my money encouraging new businesses and jobs to the city, instead of spending millions on these silly projects, especially in these uncertain times.
