Come hell or high water! It was a case high water being the hell..
Good morning! Welcome to the Armagh I newsletter, which drops into your inbox every Tuesday and Friday morning.
Come hell or high water is the saying but what if the high water is the hell? Newry and Portadown were the two hardest flood-hit areas this week.
Newry saw the Clanrye River burst its banks, coupled with the canal spilling over onto the streets for what a concoction of carnage. Businesses bore the brunt. McCartan Bros lost stock in the thousands; not to mention the renovation work carried out in the premises just mere weeks ago – all gone to waste!
Friar Tucks could be decommissioned on Sugar Island well into the New Year. Gordons Chemist have shifted operations to Rathfriland – when they’ll be back up and running in Newry; only time will tell?
Hugh Boyle from the Cue Club told Newry.ie that it could take £500,000 to get them back up and running. Insurance – no chance. This wasn’t supposed to happen. Flood defences were put in place. 200-year-old trees were felled to stop this from happening.
No notice was given! Surely the catastrophe that unfolded could have been lessened with some forewarning? Questions will be asked in the weeks and months to come but whether the right answers are forthcoming is an altogether different proposition.
In Portadown, it was residents who were a much more affected. Flood waters have been taking a lot longer to recede, affecting residents in the Ashgrove Road area, many of whom were marooned in their homes.
Boats replaced cars, washing machines floating in garages
Fortunately, volunteers and good old community spirit have been at play here. Food and medical supplies being ferried in by those able to do so. And fair play to the emergency services who have worked around the clock to help alleviate those pressures.
Come hell or high water, our community will look after those in need!
Before we go onto the headlines, we just wanted to highlight an opportunity to join Armagh I. Do you, or know of anyone, who would like to join our team as a Sales and Marketing Executive? Check out the job details here.
