Council introduce private enforcement officers...again!
Good morning, readers. It’s been a while since we last covered enforcement officers in the ABC Borough. The previous company – WISE – were, to say the least, controversial. They did not continue beyond the initial 12-month pilot – a decision the company took themselves despite being offered an extension by Council.
At the time concerns were raised over how these enforcement officers were deployed, which a large concentration of the fines coming in Portadown. There were accusations the officers were targeting smokers in large shopping areas – like predators preying of the butt droppers.
However, Council’s head of environmental health said the approach “focused on an intelligence-led deployment, where we may have seen historical littering and the activities that go on in that area and the footfall and business of certain areas”.
Dog fouling, which was/is and has been noted as a huge problem in the borough, accounted for very little of the fines.
Council say the new enforcement officers, who will begin their work next Monday, will “enhance and enforce its zero tolerance approach to littering, fly-tipping and dog fouling,” but it’ll be interesting to see how many fines are issued for each of the aforementioned issues.
