Holy cow! The mystery of the missing Markethill sculptures solved
The famous cows have moo'ved for the time being
Contrary to popular belief, the news cycle in Armagh never stops. 24 hours a day, seven days a week, we’re getting all manner of tip-offs and updates from you, the public, on issues of note across the county.
The cattle had barely reached boiling point in the office on Monday morning when we were met with one such issue that (for all of a few hours), left us udderly bemused.
The Markethill cow sculptures - many of us know them. These beacons represent the rich agricultural heritage of the village and serve as an unmistakable marker as you travel down the Newry Road.
There was just one problem. We herd on the grapevine that these sculptures were missing!
The steaks couldn’t have been higher. Instantly we got on the case - who could possibly have beef with these beloved bovines?
As always we can’t just bull on with the story. Instead we took it by the horns and set out to work.
It took us a few phone calls to get to the bottom of it. At first, the council knew nothing about it, and were just as stumped as we were.
We felt like we’d be sat (quite literally) till the cows came home, but thankfully, we managed to find out that the cattle had not, in fact, been stolen.
They had been merely taken away for temporary refurbishment. Thus, this legen-dairy mystery had come to an end.
We do admit, we are milking the story a bit, as it didn’t turn out to be the haughty heifer heist that we initially feared. There’s no need for a beefed up police presence in the area after-all.
However, it’s a good example of the issues that land on our desks. No matter how big or small, if it’s in the public interest we’ll do out best to try and find out the truth of the matter.
For some thornier stories however, we may have to steer clear.
