For five weeks, refuse workers based at the depot in Armagh have been carrying out industrial action, following the dismissal of a colleague – and Union shop steward – earlier this summer. Reasons for the dismissal have not been publicly disclosed.
As a result, bin collections across Armagh and Cusher have been badly hit. The number of bin lorries on the road on a daily basis has dropped significantly and residents are feeling it.
Earlier this week we reported how the Unite members, based in Armagh, have called on Council to offer ratepayers a rebate because of a lack of service. In that article we also asked readers – those who got to the end of the story (a good representation for the poll) whether they supported the strike.
It was a simple poll: Yes, No, or a sitting on the fence option of requiring more details before making a decision.
Far from being scientific, it gave a fairly even three-way split between the three options. 38.8% sided with the workers and 30.1% opted to support the Council’s decision. However, a large portion (31%) are keen to know more of the finer details…

If someone feels unfairly dismissed then they need to go to an employment tribunal, nothing would ever get done if we striked every time someone is fired. There could have been good reasons for getting fired, but that’s not up to me or the people striking to decide. It’s up to a tribunal to decide
Go back to work use the unfair dismissal procedures stop annoying the rate payers
