Pavements have long been the domain of the pedestrian. However, most recently, shoppers in our town centres seem to have been unwittingly signed up for an adrenaline-pumping game of dodge-the-cyclist. Walking without constantly checking over your shoulder? That's so passé!
In this game of "whack-a-bike", pedestrians must master the art of sudden sidesteps and quick reflexes to avoid being caught in a two-wheeled whirlwind.
Ever walked down William Street or the Lough Road in Lurgan? You’re taking your life in your hands!
Frustratingly, this isn’t a new issue. The Police issued a warning to pavement cyclists back in 2018 after pedestrians were left competing for space in Portadown and Lurgan.
Who needs the Tour de France when you can participate in the Tour de Pavement? Local shoppers are bracing themselves before they step-out, as cyclists take pavement riding to a whole new level.
This problem doesn’t seem to be limited to town centres. Take Craigavon Lakes for example, the walkways around the lakes have been mapped out with cycle lanes but it’s not unusual to find bikes in the pedestrian lane and vice versa.
The proliferation of bikes on pavements often reflects the inadequate provision of proper cycling infrastructure and it could be argued - given previous issues highlighted - that the deteriorating condition of the roads are forcing the two wheeled commuters off our roads and onto the footpaths.
Potholes on our roads lurk like landmines, challenging road-users to navigate a treacherous terrain. As cyclists whizz by, pedestrians must master the art of hopping, skipping, and jumping to keep their footing intact. From a leisurely stroll to an unexpected hurdle race, the pavements provide endless opportunity for pedestrians to test their agility. Is this an issue where you are?

Cyclist on pavements is a real problem the proposed sinage is very welcome. As someone whi frequently walks the lakes its very difficult to ensure waljers/cyclists use correct paths. However if cyclist would please warn walkers by ringing their bell it would be a help especially fir older walkers. Also there should be a speed limit for cyclist some think they are in the Tour De France
