Good morning to you all! As far as local issues go, littering and the general state of the place (some places, at least) leaves a lot to be desired at times. Littering is not a topic we’re shy on talking about either.
This week, we saw Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, take a bit of a hammering from local democracy reporter, Donal McMahon, for their inaction over the 13-year littering issue on the A1. It had been a classic case of ‘he said, she said’, until finally, we found out Council should have been dealing with it all along. And six months ago, after they admitted defeat and said they’d tackle the issue, they haven’t.
Across the Council divide, in the Armagh district we’re also very familiar with littering issues. Councillor Gareth Wilson was so fed up with the issue in Tandragee, he went and sorted it out himself.
He pointed to the “tremendous work” of volunteers but stressed there should be a “renewed onus on council to carry out litter picks try and get a handle on this problem.”
But where are the controversial WISE team and their fines?
Ah, well here’s a newsletter exclusive for you….they’ve up sticks and left! While Council offered them an extension to their yearly pilot, the Merseyside-based enforcers refused to carry on with their work. Now, Council are currently “reviewing options” in light of their exit! We’ve got the full story here.
